"The record-breaking success of  "Fahrenheit 9/11"  and  "Super Size Me"  may mark a
turning point in the acceptance of documentaries by audiences as mass entertainment. I  think audiences
are getting used to going to documentaries in a way they haven't before. Some movie executives
attribute the shift to the popularity of reality television and others to the expanding definition
of documentaries to include narrative, nonfiction entertainment. I think the success of reality
television has made documentaries more a part of the mainstream, not just a kind of movie for
intellectual aesthetes. But it is also due to the high entertainment value of the latest group
                                   of documentaries."

  • "ONE GRAFFITI ARTIST RECALLS THAT IN GRADE SCHOOL HE WAS ASKED BY A TEACHER WHAT HE WANTED TO BE WHEN BE GREW UP, TO WHICH HE RESPONDED, "I WANT TO BE EITHER A TERRORIST OR AN ARTIST."

  • -16th Annual Breckenridge Colorado Festival of Film

  • "APPROPRIATE AND USEFUL CLASSROOM MATERIAL..."

  • -Documental, Experimental Film & Video Series

  • "... A SOLIDLY HONEST VIEW OF THE URBAN GRAFFITI ARTIST WHICH IS BOTH COMPELLING AND INFORMATIVE..."

  • -Groping for Luna Zine

  • "...WHILE THE ARTISTS MAY BE PAINTED AS MENACES TO SOCIETY BY SOME; THE BRILLIANT VISUALS AND NEARLY UNLIMITED CREATIVITY OF THESE ARTISTS SPEAK OTHERWISE."

  • -4080 Magazine

  • Director Bob Bryan is extremely successful at depicting Graffiti art as an unsung and unrecognized source of some of the most original and culturally rich artwork of the 20th Century. It likens Graffiti to the impressionists of the early 1900's. Similar to Graf work, impressionist  works were not accepted into the mainstream until long after they were created.  Viewing this film makes me see the talent that is going unnoticed in the art-world.

  • -Hip-Hop Now

  • "CONVERSATIONS RANGE FROM COMPARATIVE DISCUSSIONS ON GRAFFITI'S ANCESTRAL CONNECTION TO RITUALISTIC HIEROGLYPHICS AND CAVE WRITINGS."

  • -In The Groove Magazine

  • "INTELLIGENT AND IN-DEPTH. IT'S 45 MINUTES OF ART, FROM GALLERY SHOWS TO THE STUFF ON THE STREETS. GRAFFITI VERITE' IS SURE TO OPEN YOUR EYES."

  • -Juxtapoz Magazine

  • "THE DOCUMENTARY'S NARRATION IS DONE BY THE SPRAY-PAINTER'S THEMSELVES ... THEY TRACE THE HISTORY OF LOS ANGELES GRAFFITI TO THE PRE-AEROSOL DAYS OF THE 1940'S, EXPLAINING THE EVOLUTION OF LETTERING STYLES AND THE EXPANSION OF TAGGING INTO WHAT THEY CALL 'PIECING'."

  • -Los Angeles Times

  • "THEIR WORK COMES ACROSS AS A COMPLEX, POWERFUL UNDERTAKING WITH LOADS OF ARTISTIC CREDIBILITY. THE ARTISTS DISCUSS WORKING IN A REALM OF SELF-EXPRESSION AND SOCIAL COMMENTARY AND HOW THEY ENGAGE IN A 'GAME OF SURVIVAL' ON URBAN STREETS FRAUGHT WITH PHYSICAL DANGER."

  • -Mill Valley Film Festival

  • "A MIND EXPANDING EXPERIENCE IN PEOPLE'S - AS OPPOSED TO COMMERCIAL CULTURE."

  • -MSRRT Newsletter

  • "I KEPT BEING REMINDED OF THE WORKS OF KEITH HARING AND SALVADOR DALI. I GUESS IN SOME WAYS ALL ARTS BEGINS AS REBELLION! THE M.B.C. WOULD BE HONORED TO ADD THE PROGRAM ( GRAFFITI VERITE' ) TO OUR EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARIES."

  • -The Museum of Broadcast Communications

  • "THE STRENGTH OF YOUR VIDEOTAPE IS THAT YOU FOCUS ON THE COMMENTARY OF THE ARTISTS... TO UNDERSTAND THEIR THINKING AND WHAT MOTIVATES THEM IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO AN APPRECIATION OF THIS ARTFORM."

  • -The Museum of Contemporary Art

  • "I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS VIDEO TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN GRAFFITI, ART, POLITICS OR INTO UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENCE CULTURES. YOU WILL NEVER LOOK AT ANY GRAFFITI THE SAME WAY AGAIN."

  • -Mutant Renegade Zine

  • "INTERVIEWS WITH GRAFFITI ARTISTS WHO EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN 'TAGGING' AND 'PIECING' - WHO REPORT OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS SUCH AS DODGING THE POLICE, GANG MEMBERS AND ANTI-GRAFFITI VIGILANTES."

  • -National Campaign for Freedom of Expression

  • "...THE MINORITY ARTISTS ARE SO WELL REPRESENTED AND COME ACROSS WITH SUCH INTEGRITY, INTELLIGENCE AND CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC KNOWLEDGE. THIS WILL DO A GREAT DEAL TO HELP DISPEL THE USUALLY WRONG IMPRESSION THAT GRAFFITI ARTISTS ARE ANTI-INTELLECTUAL AND UNAWARE OF ANYTHING OTHER THAN THEIR OWN WISH TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES..."

  • -Andrew Connors, National Museum, Smithsonian Institution

  • "...GRAFFITI VERITE' IS GRITTY AND DOES NOT GLAMORIZE GRAFFITI..."

  • -Bolton Colburn, Senior Curator , Orange County Museum

  • "GRAFFITI VERITE' GOES UNDERGROUND TO THE ALLEYS, STREETS, WALLS AND GALLERIES OF L.A. TO DOCUMENT THE STORIES OF 24 GRAFFITI ARTISTS WORK, PASSION AND IDEAS..."

  • -Plunge Magazine

  • "CLOSE-UP AND PERSONAL!... THIS NEWLY RELEASED AND BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED DOCUMENTARY UNCOVERS THE UNDERGROUND LOS ANGELES GRAFFITI MOVEMENT AND EXPLORES ITS RELATION TO CONTEMPORARY HIP-HOP CULTURE."

  • -Public Art Review

  • "THE RANGE OF LOS ANGELES ARTISTS AND STYLES INCLUDED IN THE VIDEO IS MIND-BOGGLING ... BRYAN CAPTURES THE TENSE ENERGY OF THE WRITERS BY NOT ALLOWING THE VIEWER SPACE TO REFLECT ON OR TIME TO ABSORB ALL THE INFORMATION HE PACKS INTO THIS VIDEO!"

  • -Public Art Review

  • "REQUIRED VIEWING FOR ALL CITIZENS OF BIG CITIES THAT DON'T UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF GRAFFITI..."

  • -Rap Pages Magazine

  • "Graffiti Verite', a 45 minute, shot on video production by director Bob Bryan, is an ambitious glimpse into Los Angeles' long standard tradition of writing.  Rather than get dragged into a whirlpool of flashy hype, this solidly crafted effort bypasses glitz and instead (thankfully) concentrates on the words and images of the over two dozen street artists profiled. It's obvious that  Bryan sees his subjects as creative people and not hooligans."

  • -Rap Pages Magazine

  • "IT IS A PERSONAL REBELLION TO REPRESENT THE TRUTH VIA THE ONLY UNCENSORED TEXTBOOK OF SOCIETY - THE WALLS."                -Relic, Graffiti Artist

  •
  • "GRAFFITI VERITE' IS A VISUALLY HYPNOTIC RIDE..."

  • -Remote Jockey Digest

  • "THIS WELL-PRODUCED EXAMINATION OF AN UNDERGROUND ARTFORM, EXPLAINED BY THE ARTISTS WHO CREATED IT WILL ADD A NEW DIMENSION TO ART CLASSES AND TO LIBRARY VIDEO COLLECTIONS. WE RECOMMEND ITS USE IN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE ART CLASSES."

  • -School Library Journal

  • "KEEPING THE CULTURE ALIVE..."

  • -The Source Magazine

  • GV2: Freedom of ExpreSSion? is a stunning look at the hip-hop subculture that has developed a lifestyle and movement of its own...The verite' aspect of GV2 is evident in the way that Bryan allows his subjects to say their peace without censorship or positioning quotes.

  • -The Source Magazine, by Eric K. Arnold

  • "VENTURING OUT INTO THE REALM OF LA'S GRAFFITI SCENE, BRYAN ENDURED SIX MONTHS OF GAINING WRITERS TRUST AND DOCUMENTING THE UNDERGROUND SUBCULTURE. REVERED BY THOUSANDS OF FILM MAKERS, CRITICS AND REVIEWERS, GRAFFITI VERITE' GAVE MANY A SECOND THOUGHT TO WHAT IS USUALLY DENOUNCED AS JUVENILE VANDALISM."

  • "...IT ISN'T VANDALISM... IT'S A BEAUTIFUL CRIME."

  • -Umbrella Magazine

  • ."GRAFFITI VERITE' IS A GREAT PRIMER FOR PEOPLE WHO JUST DON'T GET IT..."

  • -Velocity Magazine N.Y.C

  • "THE WORK SHOWN IN THE VIDEO IS VERY IMPRESSIVE, EVEN MORE SO WHEN YOU CONSIDER THAT THE PRIMARY TOOL HERE IS A CAN OF SPRAY PAINT."

  • -Video Librarian Review

  • "A MUST SEE VIDEO TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE INNER WORLD OF TODAYS URBAN CHILDREN."

  • -Wisconsin Bookwatch

Winner of international graffiti competitions, featured graffiti artist "Sano" demonstrates his artistic process and techniques, first by drawing elements of a piece on a sketchpad and then donning a protective mask and transferring his expression to a legal Graffiti Pit in Los Angeles's Venice Beach area..."
