SIRE ONE's Interview

When did you first start writing what some may call graffiti? In 1984, I had a friend from New York that would show me pictures of Graff on trains and it fascinated me, all the colors, designs, characters, and the idea of it being done with spray paint made me want to do it. I was already writing gang style Graff, so it was easy to go to the next level in Ghetto Art (Ghetto Expression).

You considered what you were doing as art? Yea. I  always looked at "hitting up" (the Black Los Angeles gang term for writing one's neighborhood or name and signifying territory) as art.
Even after being arrested a few times for vandalism.

Are you still Bombing? No. But I still love to see it and I'm still writing. Now I write on canvas and on walls where it's legalized and I'm commissioned to paint.

So you're doing it for the money now? Yea, that and a combination of other things. One of the reasons is because I love it and another is because I feel that we as artists (writers, bombers, taggers, etc.) need to start capitalizing off of our talent and work instead of those( the powers that be, the Blood suckers of the Earth) who don't really care about you and I (we). Their only concern is exploiting the Art form until it's burned out and destroys it if they could, but we know they can't keep a good Art Form down! That's why it is still around today, can't nothing stop it; not the government, not the MTA not the cops, not the media, not a damn thing! Ghetto Expressions in all aspects of art (visual, verbal, etc.) can never be destroyed as long as GOD exists.

Where do you see the Art form in the future? How far in the future are you talking about?

About five years from now. I know for a fact there will be International Galleries and Museums exhibiting and selling our paintings in the six figure range. I of course will be running an International Gallery and Museum promoting all up and coming artists. I also see more brothers understanding the business aspect of being an artist and start networking and stop hating'.

Are you Working on any new projects now? Yes I have an Urban Clothing Line that is about to drop on the masses before the year is up. Everybody is trying to do the Urban Fashion Thing. But the line we're dropping is going to fade 'em all, from 2000 and beyond.  Also if anyone needs graphic illustrations or murals (business signs, background artwork for videos and commercials, stage drop sets.) I have a team of some of the best artists around!

Is there anything else before we close this interview? One last thing I would like to give much respect and props to all the Black Writers whom I hardly ever get to hear about and who in my book were and are a driving force in this art movement (Writing, Bomb Tagging, Aerosol art, Ghetto Expression, Urban Hidden Literature, and the many other titles it has). Much, much props to Phase 2, Skeme, Dondi, Kase 2, Rammelizee, Vulcan, Daze, Dez, Sak, Gnome, Soro, that awesome ass Mode 2, SOON (the one who dropped a bomb on L.A. writers), Green SMD, Dream, Cre8 RTN, Rage DSP, all the brothers up in the Bay puttin' down, Reefa OR, and all the others I forgot to mention. All these artists I've mentioned are some of the best artists on the face of the planet. Much respect is due to them. So if any of you whom I've mentioned read this; understand that it would be phenomenal if we could start networking and possibly start a coalition that would be unstoppable. Anyone who is looking in that direction feel free to contact me so we can build.
