“Artist Statement” MAN-ONE Los Angeles, California

|
This site specific piece was part of an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Downtown L.A. entitled 'Urban Revisions: current projects for the public realm'. The exhibit was not intended to showcase Graffiti Art by any means. It was intended to highlight 'urban projects' by displaying the work of nationally recognized architects and urban designers. We (the graffiti artists) were invited to intervene in the exhibit through a group of artists and architects named ADOBE L.A.who felt that certain aspects and issues were being left out and neglected in the proposal of multimillion dollar projects being displayed. One such element, which was not addressed, was Graffiti.

My piece, "LOSDIABLOSANGELES," was a statement about the cities in which we live in and the people who create and build them. The title itself implies that the devils and angels can be one in the same. I felt that leaving the creature ambiguous would allow the public to make up their own minds about what's good or evil. The image is of a creature (the idea or the reality) with a raised arm ready to unleash its wrath upon the very person who created it (the architect). The one definitive element was the canvas I chose. I constructed a 16 foot tall massive arrow which seemed to have fallen out of the sky and landed at MOCA. I chose the arrow because it is an icon used throughout the world by graff artists and it best illustrated the fact that this was not originally meant to be there but rather an intervention. I feel that graffiti artists are at a pivotal point in global history to cause and affect change. We've transformed and evolved into a worldwide movement of artists who are not satisfied with the way things are. We are fighting for many causes in our cities and neighborhoods, all over the world, and at the same time. This unheard of phenomenon is being led and implemented by an army of tens of thousands of young people, most of who are male and need to be heard. We are no longer just ghetto nuisances doing vandalism, we are artists, professionals, entrepreneurs, college educated, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural warriors.
